Teton Literacy Program provides literacy education and resources to open doors for individuals and families to achieve their personal, professional, and academic goals, as contributing members of our community. Spurred by the request of a Jackson Hole woman who admitted that she had never learned to read, two local women formed a volunteer agency and wrote for a Volunteers In Service To America (VISTA) grant to support a program to teach basic literacy skills in 1992. Since that time, the changing demographics of the Teton County community created a constant demand not only for basic adult literacy services, but also for English as a Second Language (ESL). Each year, greater numbers of new immigrants from across the globe seek our services to help them acquire the English skills needed to succeed in their new home. In order to break down the language barries in Jackson, TLP now offers various levels of Spanish classes. The Teton Literacy Program has also added services to promote academic excellence and ensuring that all children can read by the third grade by working with Teton County School District #1.
