Adult Tutoring
Students who complete 20 English classes gain eligibility to work with a tutor. The Teton Literacy Program is always in need of tutors who can work with English Language Learners to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. It is not necessary that the tutor know the tutee's native language. The time and place for the tutoring sessions will be arranged by the tutor and tutee. TLP will provide training and support for the tutor throughout the experience.

What are the responsibilities of an adult ESL tutor?
Tutors create lesson plans and help students meet individual learning goals.

  • Before staff matches a student with a tutor, a staff member will interview the learner to set goals. The Director of Adult Services then creates an action plan based on the student’s goals to assist the tutor in lesson planning.
  • Tutors document student progress.
  • Each month tutors must fill out the adult tutor log (need to link) so that adult program staff can compile hours of instruction and hours of preparation, as well as keep a record of materials studied and observations of student growth.
  • Tutors will complete a progress report every six months to provide a comprehensive picture of the student’s progress.
  • Tutors participate in ongoing training throughout their service.
  • After working with their learner for three months, tutors will record a session on audio tape for review by the Director of Adult Services. Tutors will be provided with specific suggestions for improvement of their instruction and additional teaching techniques and activity ideas.
  • Tutors will attend enhancement workshops to strengthen their teaching skills and gain awareness of additional teaching techniques.

ESL Teacher's Assistant
The Teton Literacy Program seeks volunteers to assist teachers in adult English courses. Trained volunteers will be placed in a classroom to help the lead teacher with small group activities, answer student questions, and act as conversation partners. Classes are offered four nights and three mornings per week. See our Calendar of Events (need to link) for a current class schedule. Teacher's Assistants are asked to sign up for class sessions at least two weeks prior to the beginning of each session.

To apply for a volunteer position, please fill out the Volunteer form (PDF) and bring it by the office. For more information, call (307) 733-9242.
