DIY Lava Lamps

4/12/2016

Interested in making your own "lava lamps" at home? It's super simple!

You will need:
  • Water
  • A Clear Plastic Bottle
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Food Coloring
  • Alka-Seltzer Tablets (split into 4 pieces)
  • Glow Sticks (Optional)

Directions:
  1. Fill the plastic bottle 1/4 to 1/2 full with water.
  2. Using a funnel, fill the remainder of the bottle with oil. (Be sure to leave a little air at the top.)
  3. Add 4 to 6 drops of food coloring.
  4. Add one piece of alka-seltzer to get the lava lamp "going". Add in more tablets as the bubbling begins to diminish.
  5. Add a glow stick for an extra bit of fun.

this is so fun... will look into including this as a hands-on activity for our Wild Science Festival in September!
