Teton Literacy Day

Over 80 attendees gathered on November 17 to celebrate the exciting work being done by volunteers and students at the Teton Literacy Program (TLP). Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church generously sponsored the event which featured award presentations, speeches and a hearty dinner. Board President Julie Cheek kicked off the celebration with an announcement of the impending move into a new facility adjacent to the Community School in the Flat Creek Business Center.

Armond Acri was named Volunteer of the Year for the Children’s Program, and spoke of how a family member’s struggle with literacy inspired him to help others. Carol Schneebeck received the same honor from the adult tutoring program, where she has contributed over 257 volunteer hours. Adult Program Director, Valley Peters received the Founder’s Award for her enduring dedication to adult and community education through personal enrichment, WLLA board service and participation in community service organizations. Nell Faye, Connor Hogan and Maggie Boyt each discussed how their involvement in the TLP children’s program has impacted their lives.

Cesar Garcia and Connie Vasquez spoke of two letters to the editor that they and their classmates wrote in response to the sexual assaults that affected Jackson this summer and the ensuing racial tension. They describe their desire to have an open dialogue within the community about race relations. Volunteer liaison Eric Donely, and adult volunteer Andrew Carson also talked about their inspiring experiences working with the adult program.
