Family Literacy

Join the Family Literacy Program!
Teton Literacy Center’s preschool program, Literacy Lab, is currently accepting applications for incoming Kindergarteners. The Literacy Lab is a program for children ages 4-5 years old who will be entering kindergarten in the fall of 2020 and do not have access to a preschool program.  Students attend school two mornings a week from 8:00-1:00 through the end of May 2020.

Literacy Lab is a part of the Family Literacy Program which works with children and parents to reach their academic and family goals.  Children attend preschool classes and parents have the opportunity to receive English support or parent education support. Parents are also involved in parent education and parent and child together time activities integrated together creating a unique and comprehensive family literacy program with a powerful impact.

Please contact Teton Literacy Center at 307.733.9242  or email Lina at  lina@tetonliteracy.org  for more information.

Definition of Family Literacy
Teton Literacy Center provides interactive literacy services between children and parents with the ultimate goal of supporting whole families.  In promoting family literacy, Teton Literacy Center encourages parents in their role as their child’s primary teacher and educational advocate.  We provide individualized literacy support for children to increase their success in school and acquire skills for a lifetime of learning.

Teton Literacy Center believes that parent engagement and support is essential for children to reach their academic potential and become successful in school and their community.  Learning is more successful when it is connected to and supported by a child’s home environment and family interests.   We believe in building on families’ funds of knowledge and using a collaborative approach to parent and child instruction.  We provide a variety of opportunities for parents to be involved in their child’s education, learn strategies to increase their child’s academic success and to increase their own personal literacy goals.  Family Literacy opportunities include: parent education, child education, parent time, and parent and child together time.
PARENT EDUCATION
Adult Education in family literacy is designed to extend the basic education skills of the adult in context of the goals set by the individual and the family. Adult options include:

  • THE "LANGUAGE EXCHANGE" PROGRAM THROUGH TLC, CWC and TLC.

  • HOME VISITS
  • GED CLASSES

child education
  • Through Literacy Lab early literacy instruction, we hope to prepare children for academic success in Kindergarten and beyond. Children must be at least four years old to participate.
  • With after school programs for school age children, we support literacy development through remedial and enrichment programs including tutoring, clubs, homework help, and summer camps.
  • We offer enrichment programs to children (ages 3 and above) while parents attend evening classes, ensuring the whole family is being provided for.
the "literacy Lab" Preschool Program
The Literacy Lab Preschool Program is centered on the research-based perspective of emergent literacy, in which children are viewed as active participants in their own literacy development. Students hypothesize about how written language works and how they can use it in their everyday lives, then test their hypotheses through a variety of social interactions (e.g., playing, writing, reading, talking, watching television). Through this method, young children engage in literate behaviors as they grow closer to becoming conventionally literate.
