Nationally, over 40 million American adults demonstrate low English literacy levels, according to the National Institute for Literacy. Adult Learners at the TLP come from myriad backgrounds: some are Jackson natives who wish to increase their skills in spelling and writing; others have relocated from Eastern Europe, Asia or Latin America, and seek to develop their English. The most visible group of immigrants is Latinos, who comprise 12% of Teton County's population as of 2003. Sixty percent have little to no English proficiency. Volunteer tutors provide literacy-focused education to Adult Learners. The Teton Literacy Program offers six tutor training sessions for volunteers annually, providing training, information, support and workshops. Learner goals are set through an ongoing process with staff, students, and tutors. All volunteers attend tutor training sessions, where they receive information on assessing student progress and creating lesson plans. Tutors work with functionally illiterate adults, as well as English Language Learners for two hours a week. Tutors and students learn from one another, and often form lasting friendships. As one tutor recently said of her student, "I feel blessed to have her in my life." For more information, call (307) 733-9242. To volunteer, please fill out the Volunteer form. If you are a student interested in working with a tutor, please fill out the Student Sign-Up form. Both forms are PDFs and require the Adobe Acrobat Reader.
