What is soar?
TLC made exciting changes to our summer programs in 2018! In order for TLC's summer programs to better support our participants academic success and social and emotional well-being, TLC moved to a free eight week intensive summer program for students entering 1st- 8th grade. SOAR consists of 4 weeks of full day programming and 4 weeks of half day programming, designed to coincide with TCSD's summer school. Each student enrolled will commit to attending all eight weeks of SOAR!
We want TLC students to grow into thriving community members who have options to college and career paths they deserve. Through continuous support, an expanded view of literacy, and the interconnected role that it plays in all content areas, students will be supported in vocabulary, science, technology, engineering and math to prepare them for the 21st century. SOAR is a supportive community where students have opportunities to experience success and build competence, confidence, connections, character and compassion.

At SOAR, campers will discover a community of friends, counselors and leaders who view each individual camper as a student who can and will succeed.
- Dedicated time for vocabulary, literacy and math instruction by full time TLC staff targeted for each individual camper
- Dedicated time for recreation and play
- Dedicated time for building the social-emotional skills needed to thrive in the 21st century
- Adventurous field trips full of fun and learning
- Hands-on learning activities which provide real world practice for literacy and math strategies

why are summer programs important?
The National Summer Learning Association (NSLA) says “when the school year ends, children in high-poverty environments struggle not only with basic needs like healthy food and safe places to spend their days, but with losing precious time during the summer months to continue their learning. The cumulative effect is a crisis in the making: by the fifth grade, summer learning loss can leave low-income students two-and-a-half to three years behind their peers.
Students who fall behind over the summer are less likely to graduate from high school or go on to college. NSLA believes that diversity of every kind is critical to our nation’s success. Creating opportunities for summer learning sets the stage for innovation, creativity, and leadership in every community: the young people we nurture today are the foundation of our society tomorrow.”

Summer program impact
The average student came to SOAR 2019 reading 9 months behind grade level and 14 months behind in math. 100% of students who completed the program saw maintenance or growth in both reading and math scores as compared to the two to three month skill loss that students face without access to summer learning opportunities nationally.

Families must commit to the ENTIRE eight weeks of SOAR to be considered for enrollment.
SOAR will run Monday - Thursday from June 20th - August 11th. The first four weeks will be full days at TLC. The second four weeks SOAR will run for two hours following TCSD's Summer Program:
Due to the increasing waitlist numbers for SOAR, we will be asking families to sign a contract of commitment to all eight weeks of programming. Failure to attend 87% or more days of SOAR programming will result in the reduction of points in future TLC program lotteries.
Parents of all accepted students will be required to attend a Mandatory Parent Meeting.
Parent Meetings will be held the following dates and times. Meeting details and location will be sent after acceptance to program. Families only need to attend one meeting:
Families of rising 1st - 5th grade students will be notified of acceptance or waitlist status via email on Thursday, March 17th.
Top rising 6th - 8th grade SOAR applicants will be invited to interview with TLC in March 2022 as a next step in the application process.
You will be emailed an invite for your student to participate in this step in early March. Final notifications for rising 6th - 8th grade applicants will be emailed following Spring Break.
Enrollment will be determined via TLC's weighted lottery process to ensure we serve the students who need summer programs the most, first. SOAR accepts students currently in Kindergarten through 7th grade.

- Half Day (3pm-5pm): July 18th- August 11th (Students in our entering 6th-8th grade cabin will meet from 1pm-3pm)
