Back to School: A Parent's Guide
Back to School Routines
Establish Homework Routines- Help your child set a regular time and place for homework. Choose a time that works well for your family's schedule. Find a place that is quiet and has good lighting. Make sure your child has supplies such as pens, pencils, paper, and a dictionary. Ask to see completed assignments and celebrate completion of projects.
Healthy Habits- A healthy diet, exercise and enough sleep will help our children be ready for the day and set them up for success. Children who eat a healthy diet and get regular exercise can concentrate better during the school day. Getting enough sleep will help your child get up on time, feel good, and be ready for a full day of learning.
Read Together Daily- Set aside time to read with your child each day. You can make reading a part of daily routines by reading stories at bedtime and keeping lots of books and magazines in the house. Come by Teton Literacy to talk with program staff about book or magazine recommendations or look at our lending library for new reads.
Talk About the School Day - Ask your child to tell you about the school day. Push to get more than just the standard one word answers. Ask her what he/she learned, and how he/she felt during the day. Listen carefully to her answers, and help think of ways to solve any challenges. If teachers send newsletters, use that information ask detailed questions about topics they are learning and school projects.
