2025/26 School Year
Volunteer Application

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us this school year! Our volunteers are a critical part of TLC's mission to change lives through the power of literacy. We would not be able to serve over 350 families every year, at no cost, without the support of our robust team of volunteers.
Our volunteer placement timeline will be August to December. Our primary need is for weekly volunteers in our K-12 Literacy Tutors and Adult ESL Small Group Leads. These positions are for the entire duration of the school year, with breaks aligning with the TCSD calendar.
Email Anna Varley at [email protected] with any questions.
Thanks for your interest and patience!
Can't commit to volunteering the whole school year? Check out some of our other volunteer opportunities! We often need substitute tutors (volunteer training required) to cover for full-time volunteers, event help and help in our office.

Snapshot of Volunteering at TLC

What our volunteers do at Teton Literacy Center? Volunteers are critical in bringing the mission of TLC to life. We are seeking volunteers to be matched in a weekly role during the school year. They motivate, encourage and support students and parents with reading, writing, and language development. Volunteers are matched based on interests, schedule, abilities and program needs. No experience necessary!

How to become a Teton Literacy Center Volunteer? Those interested in volunteering should start by completing our Volunteer Application! Applicants will be required to complete am in-person training, provide two positive references and all persons over 18 will be required to undergo a background check.

What is the commitment for volunteers at Teton Literacy Center?  Our greatest need is for weekly volunteers who can serve as an individual or small group tutor for children or parents. Volunteers are asked to commit for the school year through the end of May, however we follow the TCSD calendar with all major holidays (Thanksgiving, Winter Break, and Spring Break).  If volunteers are going to miss more than 5 weeks throughout the school year.  We ask them to consider an administrative volunteer role or split their tutoring with another friend or family member.  This provides consistency and a deeper impact for our students.

Volunteer Application Process

HOW DO I APPLY TO BE A VOLUNTEER?
  1. Prospective volunteers should submit a volunteer application.
  2. TLC conducts a comprehensive background search process for all volunteer candidates, as well as a formal background check on all volunteers over the age of 18. This background check will be conducted via Intellicorp by a member of TLC's Leadership Team. Background check forms will be made available at the time of training.
  3. Prospective volunteers will be required to attend a New Volunteer Training. This will be in person at Teton Literacy Center.
  4. Prospective volunteers will be required to provide two positive references. References are submitted through the volunteer application.
  5. Once all steps in the application process are complete, our staff will evaluate your talents, interests and availability match you with an appropriate TLC volunteer opportunity.
What happens after I apply?
  1. After completing the new volunteer training, completing the background paperwork, and getting two positive references, staff will begin working to place you in a program.
  2. For tutoring, this includes working to align your schedule with a student's a
What if I am out of town frequently or have an inconsistent schedule?
In order to support students in making growth, we find that having a steady, consistent and reliable volunteer tutor is key.  We also recognize that schedules change and may need adjustments.  If you are here for the majority of the school year, with the exception of 5 weeks.  We think tutoring would be a great fit.  This is where we have the greatest need.

If your work or travel schedules don't allow for that consistency, we ask you to think about finding a friend or family member to split the volunteer opportunity with or consider the administrative volunteer role that has ample flexibility.

Wyoming Mandated Reporter Law

Wyoming state law mandates that any individual over the age of 18 who suspects child/vulnerable adult abuse, neglect or exploitation is required to report their observations.

At TLC, this is extremely rare, but in the instance that you do suspect a student is at risk, you are required to inform a TLC staff member of your observations, or if a student makes a disclosure to you. The TLC staff will then document your observation and work with the family to connect them with resources, including the Department of Family Services, as needed.
