SOAR Summer 2025 Assistant Teacher

Report to: Anja Carlson, Operations Manager & SOAR Classroom lead teachers
Compensation: $20-$26 per hour, DOE

Summary: The SOAR counselor is responsible for supporting all SOAR programs Entering K-8th grade, specifically focused on supporting math and literacy small groups, field trips, community partnerships, project-based learning and STEAM work. The counselor will be responsible for the general safety and development, growth and skill achievement of the students in his/her group.
This contract position will start with training dates on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 17th and 18th. Then programs will run from June 23rd-August 14th. Max of 215 hours for summer contract
June 17th-18th- to 16 hours of training and prep work prior to program start date
June 23rd- July 31st- SOAR Program, Monday-Thursday, 8:30-5:30 (8 hour day pay- 1 hour lunch break) 128 hours
August 1-14th- Practice K Program, Monday- Thursday 8:30- 1:30 (5 hour days) 40 hours
Qualifications: At least one completed year of college; and experience working with children required. Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks independently. Experience with literacy programs desirable; excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Spanish (preferred), Current CPR and first aid certification preferred

RESPONSIBILITIES
Programmatic Responsibilities:
- Co-teach and, on occasion, lead lessons and activities for a classroom of up to 18 students.
- Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities each week. Activities may include: math and literacy intervention work, read alouds, STEAM lessons, project based learning, games, songs, opening and closing ceremonies, family nights, etc.
- Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas, this includes but is not limited to being responsible for your campers’ safety and their whereabouts at all times.Work with the teaching team to plan and implement lessons.
- Communicate with parents about students’ experiences and report concerns to camp leadership.
Identify and respond to camper behavior issues. - Assist and maintain accurate program records including incident reports, lesson plans and daily attendance.
- Help guide interns and camp volunteers, if applicable, to have a deeper understanding of leadership and counseling skills

Essential Responsibilities:
- Provide a safe and healthy environment, both physically and mentally, to ensure the operation of a quality summer program. Know and understand ALL emergency procedures associated with the camp program.
- Ensure campers and families are aware of the rules, and daily scheduled routines.
- Take responsibility for the quality of supplies, equipment, sites and materials.
- Report all suspicions of child abuse to proper authorities.
- Establish a relationship with each camper and know his or her present level of understanding; consider the needs of all the campers and treat each camper with respect and dignity.
