What is soar?
TLC made exciting changes to our summer programs in 2018! In order for TLC's summer programs to better support our participants academic success and social and emotional well-being, TLC moved to a free eight week intensive summer program for students entering 1st- 8th grade. SOAR consists of 4 weeks of full day programming and 4 weeks of half day programming, designed to coincide with TCSD's summer school. Each student enrolled will commit to attending all eight weeks of SOAR!
We want TLC students to grow into thriving community members who have options to college and career paths they deserve. Through continuous support, an expanded view of literacy, and the interconnected role that it plays in all content areas, students will be supported in vocabulary, science, technology, engineering and math to prepare them for the 21st century. SOAR is a supportive community where students have opportunities to experience success and build competence, confidence, connections, character and compassion.

why are summer programs important?
The National Summer Learning Association (NSLA) says “when the school year ends, children in high-poverty environments struggle not only with basic needs like healthy food and safe places to spend their days, but with losing precious time during the summer months to continue their learning. The cumulative effect is a crisis in the making: by the fifth grade, summer learning loss can leave low-income students two-and-a-half to three years behind their peers.
Students who fall behind over the summer are less likely to graduate from high school or go on to college. NSLA believes that diversity of every kind is critical to our nation’s success. Creating opportunities for summer learning sets the stage for innovation, creativity, and leadership in every community: the young people we nurture today are the foundation of our society tomorrow.”

Summer program impact
The average student came to SOAR 2019 reading 9 months behind grade level and 14 months behind in math. 100% of students who completed the program saw maintenance or growth in both reading and math scores as compared to the two to three month skill loss that students face without access to summer learning opportunities nationally.
SOAR stops summer learning loss through targeted programming and the hard work and commitment by students and families.
