Brain Breaks
Regardless of the tutoring format, it's important to make your tutoring sessions fun, because that's what reading should be-- fun, never a "chore". If you feel your student isn't interested in what you're asking them to do, don't push them, this isn't a session of cross-fit. Take a short break, get silly, and have some fun with one of the following "brain break" activities.
Texting TimeThe marvels of the Zoom Chat Box will be on full display with this activity. Explain to your student that for a few minutes you cannot talk to each other, instead you need to communicate with one another through the Chat Box. Ask open-ended questions about anything you think your student might be interested in discussing and have fun!

2 Truths and 1 LieThe ultimate way to discover some neat things about your student. Using the Zoom Chat Box, ask your student to transcribe three statements about themselves. Of those three statements, explain that two must be true and one must be a lie. After they have written the three statements, it's up to you to guess which one is the lie. Most of all, this activity is a fun way to start conversations with your student. When finished, you can swap roles and repeat.

Would You RatherA fun and silly way to get to know one another. Use this sheet of questions to ponder how you'd respond to the most novel scenarios. Or, get your creative juices going and create your very own questions to discuss. Always remember to ask why they choose what they did. You'll likely be surprised by what they say.

Name, Place, Animal, ThingThis is essentially a game of "Categories". To play, use the chat box. Begin by picking a letter (e.g. the letter -b). Then, your student has to list a person's name, a place, an animal, and a thing that begins with that letter (e.g. Brenda, Bolivia, Bee, Bucket). Swap roles and repeat.

PictionaryThis fun classic game is easily compatible with Zoom. You can use the Zoom Whiteboard or simply a pad of paper and a writing utensil to complete. To play, use this pictionary word generator to generate a word to draw. Then, you have one-minute to draw the word while your student guesses what the word is. When finished, swap roles and repeat.

Heads UpA fun way to build vocabulary is by playing "Heads Up" with your student. Begin by downloading the app onto your phone. When the download is complete, it's time to play! Swap roles with your student so they can work on developing both a definition for a word, and determining what a word is based on the definition you provide.
